tips and tricks that can help you make moving easier

I knew when I married my husband that I wouldn't have much of a stable life. I knew that I would have to be willing to move as often as needed for his job. Over the last eight years, we have moved six times. Although moving is getting easier, it is still a challenge that we have to get through. All of those moves have helped me come up with a lot of great ways to reduce the time it takes to pack and unpack the things we own. This blog contains tips and tricks that can help you make moving easier.

5 Tips For Nailing Down Your New Furniture Arrangement Before Your Furniture Arrives

Whether you are paying movers to move your belongings for you or are tackling a long-distance move on your own, knowing exactly where your belongings will go in your new home can save time and energy when you arrive at your new house. For example, if you have paid for your moving company to reassemble furniture for you upon arrival, they will usually assemble the furniture in the room you designate and leave it in the place where it was assembled. If you know exactly where you want your furniture to go, you will not have to move it again after your movers have left.

However, it can be difficult to work out your furniture arrangement ahead of time. Here are some tips for making your project easier.

Create a List of All of Your Furniture

The first step in deciding where all your furniture will go is determining what items will go in which rooms. To do this, start by making a list of all of your furniture. Include small items such as end tables and trash cans as well as larger items such as beds and couches.

Next, make a list of the rooms your new home will have. Start breaking up your furniture list into the rooms your new home will have. Do not be afraid to break up furniture that was housed in the same room in your current home, especially if you have a different layout or number of rooms in your new home.

Measure Everything

Begin by getting accurate measurements of your new home. You may be able to get blueprints or ask your realtor to measure the rooms for you if you are unable to measure the home yourself. Next, record height, length, and width measurements for all of your furniture. A spreadsheet can be useful for this step.

Consider a Paper Mock-Up

One of the more simple ways to decide where your furniture will go is by creating a two-dimensional paper model of your new home. First, draw a scale model of each of your rooms on a sheet of paper. Then, using the same scale, make cutouts of each of your pieces of furniture. You can then move the furniture around the model until you determine an arrangement you like. Once you have an arrangement you like, tape the paper furniture in place on the model to help you remember where everything goes.

Go Digital

If you are comfortable with technology, you might consider an interior decorating app that will allow you to position your furniture in a three-dimensional model of your new home. This will give you a more realistic idea of how your finished project will look, which can make you happier with your furniture placement. Some apps will even allow you to upload pictures of your furniture as opposed to using stock images to represent your furniture. This will give you the most realistic image of how your new home will look with various furniture layouts.

Print Multiple Copies of Your Final Decision

Once you have decided on your final layout, consider printing multiple copies of it. This way you can keep a copy for yourself, give copies to your moving crew, and tape copies on the entrance to each room. This will help everyone involved in the move know exactly where you want your belongings placed.

If you are unable to make a final decision about where you want your furniture placed before you move, consider asking your moving company whether they offer extra services, such as white glove services, that will allow you to hold the movers longer in order to get the arrangement of your furniture right.
